Jay Shafer is the guy who is largely credited as the starter of the tiny house movement. Back in the ’90s he built himself a “tiny house” (around 100 square feet) that has things like storage below desks, collapsible tables, etc. The movement is based on architecture, housing, art, esthetics, and low-impact living.

He started the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, and has also written a number of books, including the The Small House Book. He was also featured on Oprah’s show in 2008, and has been profiled by a number of news outlets, such as NPR.
“Jay Shafer designs tiny homes and has even started a blog about living on less. His homes have a designer feel — interior wood paneling, stainless steel kitchens, built-in bookcases — packed into a space about the size of walk-in closets of upscale homes. His smallest home has 65 square feet; his biggest (a three-bedroom place) has 774 square feet,” reports an article from CNN.
